Reviewed by Weird – TOXX Volume One

Over the last few months, I’ve had the opportunity to read the first four issues of Evan Carothers and Eric Palicki’s incredible Wolven Press series Toxx.  During that time, Evan and Eric’s writing, paired with the amazing art of Ben Worrell, has taken me on a journey of discovery, revelation, miracles, corruption, betrayal, loss, and now….a reunion!

Now, the time has come for the end of this first story arc with the release of not only Toxx issue #5 but the release of Toxx Volume One.  If you’ve never read Toxx before or had a chance to read my other reviews, let’s recap with a premise:

The world is a wasteland. The remnants of civilization crumble amidst mutated creatures and ever-present radiation. What’s left of humanity is now sterile and scattered, surviving in loose underground bands.

Claire is remarkable among them–perhaps the youngest human left alive, she has weathered three long decades of unyielding hardship. The whole world changed In the blink of an eye when she discovered she was pregnant. Now, her very existence threatens the fragile balance of power that remains.

In this ravaged world, where hope is a currency coveted by many, Claire finds herself pursued relentlessly by two ruthless factions. A fearsome band of mutants, consumed by a seething hatred for humanity, seeks to obliterate her as a symbol of the past. Meanwhile, a ferocious gang of merciless bikers stops at nothing to seize her unborn child, viewing it as a rare and precious resource.

Every ounce of Claire’s being is dedicated to survival, not only for herself but for the fragile life budding within her. Amidst the unforgiving wasteland, where danger lurks in every shadow, Claire’s journey weaves a captivating tale of courage, sacrifice, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and her unborn child.

And like all good things, this first arc must come to an end.  But the story you see is far from over.  This last piece of the story showcases a very strange but heartfelt reunion, where you will find that not only should you judge a book by its cover, but things aren’t always always what they seem to be.  Of course, like the other entries in this series, Evan and Eric have once again left us with a hell of a cliffhanger, but fear not!  This story is just the beginning, as we are just scratching the surface of what’s to come with the Toxx Universe!
