A24 has released a trailer for the independent film The Whale. The film has been on the receiving end of much praise during its festival tour ahead of its release and has not only seen Brendan Fraser receive standing ovation after standing ovation but also has led many to believe that this will be a resurgence of his career and has him as an Oscar Award frontrunner.

The film follows Fraser’s character Charlie. An English teacher who is morbidly obese and is attempting to reconnect with his teenage daughter all while dealing with his personal demons. Having become estranged after Charlie walked out on his family in an attempt to pursue a possible future with his lover. Charlie’s lover’s death leads to his coping with grief by overeating.

Check out the official synopsis below:

“From Darren Aronofsky comes The Whale, the story of a reclusive English teacher who attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter. Starring Brendan Fraser and based on the acclaimed play by Samuel D. Hunter.”

Staring alongside Fraser are Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Samantha Morton, and Ty Simpkins. The film is based on the stage play by Samuel D. Hunter. The film saw its premiere during the Venice Film Festival where the viral video of the six-minute standing ovation Fraser received made its rounds on social media.

There is certainly a ton to unpack in this drama film but it has been a shining achievement for Fraser and a well-deserved one. Fraser has seen somewhat of an uphill battle to return to acting and since his return, he has been received with love and admiration by fans. We hope this opens the door to a new era of Fraser’s career reminiscent of his glory days when his name could be seen on every poster and credit for hit films that included hits such as The Mummy, George of the Jungle, and Encino Man and even some of his most recent work which including his heroic and humorous performance in DC‘s Doom Patrol.
