Ellen DeGeneres‘s daytime talk show ending after her upcoming 2021-2022 season.
After a 2020-2021 season that was filled with a toxic workplace controversy and declining rating. DeGeneres has decided to end her daytime talk show after its upcoming 19th season.
The news was leaked to The Daily Mail Wednesday morning breaking the news ahead of DeGeneres and Warner Bros.’ official announcement. DeGeneres will be addressing the ending of her talk show in the opening monologue of her taping today.
DeGeneres was at the top of daytime entertainment for many years and it led her to winning many Daytime Emmys. During the pandemic the show has seen a decline in ratings of 40% year-to-year. The New York Times took a look into the show’s ratings decline and garnered a lot of attention and led to questions of the show’s future.
DeGeneres had already previously indicated that she was considering ending her talk show, but went on to extend her deal through 2022. Mike Darnell shared a statement to Deadline saying:
“Although all good things must come to an end, you still have hope that the truly great things never will,”
“The Ellen Show started as the little program that could and became an absolute phenomenon. Over the years, it established itself as the premiere destination for both superstars and incredible heartfelt human interest stories. The show and Ellen brought comedy, joy, happiness, comfort (and dancing!) to countless millions every day for 18 years. It was and is an indelible piece of the television landscape, and it will be sorely missed.”
