Gou Tanabe’s Manga Adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu Coming To Dark Horse
Dark Horse Comics has announced that Gou Tanabe, the acclaimed artist behind the Eisner-nominated H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness, is set to immerse readers once again in the chilling horror of H.P. Lovecraft’s published works with the manga H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu.
This complete graphic novel, translated by Zack Davisson, is slated for release in a trade paperback format, featuring 290 pages of eldritch horror.

H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu delves into the unsettling connections between two disparate bands of worshippers, united not only by their shared practice of blood sacrifice, but also by the haunting utterance: Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn—“In his house at R’lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.”
The narrative unravels as Francis Thurston, driven by an investigation into the cult of Cthulhu, ventures to the most forsaken spot in the vast Pacific, ultimately encountering Earth’s supreme terror – the risen corpse-city of R’lyeh.
Junji Ito, renowned for works such as Uzumaki and Black Paradox, praised Gou Tanabe’s interpretation of Lovecraftian lore, expressing his admiration for Tanabe’s adaptation and acknowledging its influence on his own creative decisions.

This edition of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu features eight full-color pages and a tip-in title page shimmering with silver ink. It is scheduled for release on July 31, 2024, in bookstores and on August 1, 2024, at your favorite local comic shops.
