Starz Announces Spartacus Sequel Series
Starz has announced a Spartacus sequel series confirming their plans to bring back one of its most influential and groundbreaking series. The network confirmed that the new sequel series is in development and will be massively expanding the world and characters of the original series to create a new path that will be explored and touch on many of the untouched parts of the original series. The original series ran for four seasons and is set to return with original series creator, writer, and executive producer Steven S. DeKnight who will be executive producing and serving as showrunner for the new series.
The series will be set in the aftermath of Marcus Crassus and the Roman army’s win over Spartacus and will explore the underbelly of Rome. Much like the original series, it will delve into the deceit and blood that unfolds in the darkest parts of Rome as we revisit some characters. Plot details remain under wraps but could this be the rise of a new leader after Spartacus fell to the Roman army?
The original series premiered in 2010 to much praise as it followed a gladiator as he rose through the ranks to become champion and eventually, leader of the rebel army who stood against Rome. As the series followed an intriguing anthology format with each season standing on its own two feet, it began with Spartacus: Blood and Sand which was followed by the prequel series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, and lastly the final two chapters of Spartacus: Vengeance and Spartacus: War of the Damned.
The original series featured the impressive portrayal of Spartacus by Adam Whitfield whose untimely passing led Liam McIntyre to take over the role. The series also feature Manu Bennett, Lucy Lawless, Viva Bianca, Katrina Law, Peter Mensah, Dustin Clare, and many more throughout the four-season run.
Lionsgate Television will produce the series for Starz and will have Karen Bailey, Giovanna Desselle, and Alex Alberts overseeing the project for the network alongside Scott Herbst and Jocelyn Sabo attached for Lionsgate.
No casting or further details have been released but stay tuned as more information becomes available.
