For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated with Pirates.  I’m not sure exactly what it is about them, maybe it’s their lack of structure, the complete disregard for authority, the adventures out on the open seas without a care in the world, but whatever it is, I’m a very big fan.  So you can bet that Peter Pan, a movie with not only a pirate but a pirate with a hook for a hand, would be something I’d totally be into!  So when I heard that Caleb Thusat‘s The Neverland was a spiritual sequel, I definitely knew that I needed to check it out!

If you haven’t heard of it already, here’s the premise:

A boy named Percy is forced to grow up too soon when his mother falls ill in the midst of a global pandemic. Lost in desperation, he escapes to a fairytale land.

He quickly discovers it’s no longer the happy dreamland from his mother’s bedtime stories.

A darkness has settled in and all magic has faded from the land. Can Percy help bring light back to the darkness OR will he remain forever lost in…

The Neverland!

I have to say, of all of the Peter Pan-related stories that I have read, this one definitely drew me in the most!  Caleb found a way to tie this story to real, modern times that added a lot of emotions to the story, and it kept me flipping the pages to find out what was going to happen next.

These three issues tell the story of a young boy named Percy who, dealing with his mom being isolated away from him with an illness (looks to be Covid-19 or something very similar) ends up in Neverland, where he is mistaken for the boy hero who rescued the land from the evil Captain Hook so many years ago, despite him trying to convince them he’s not the same person.  But he reluctantly agrees to help them find this Peter Pan if that means he’s able to finally return home.

I’m very excited about the next chapter in this series, which is available on Kickstarter now!  Make sure you head to the Kickstarter page and sign up to be part of the fantasy adventure. If you are a fan of Peter Pan, you definitely will want to check this out!
