PS5 Slim Confirmed to Release This Holiday Season

Sony has unveiled a slimmer redesign for the PlayStation 5 (PS5). Both the disc drive model and the digital model of the PS5 will receive a slimmed-down look this holiday season. Sony will allow users to purchase a disc drive separately, enabling them to upgrade a digital model to a disc-compatible version. These revamped versions of the PS5 will be available in November.

According to a PlayStation blog post, the new PS5 will boast a reduction in volume by more than 30% and weight by 18% to 24%, compared to its previous model. One notable change involves the different textures of the new covers. The top portion will have a glossy look, while the bottom part will remain matte. However, information regarding the compatibility of console shells that Sony currently sells, which allow users to customize the appearance of their console, has not been provided.

If users choose to purchase the newer digital version and later decide to upgrade to a disc version, they will need to purchase the drive separately. In the United States, the drive will cost $79.99. The total cost of combining a digital console and a disc drive is slightly more expensive than purchasing the disc drive version outright as the price tag on these new models will be $499.99 for a PS5 with a disc drive, whereas the PS5 digital edition will retail at $449.99.
