Popeye Returning To the Big Screen With New Live-Action Film in the Works

Popeye, the iconic sailor known for his love of spinach, is set to make a return to the big screen in a new live-action movie, as reported by Variety.

According to the report, the film is a collaboration between Chernin Entertainment and King Features, the owner of the Popeye IP. Chernin Entertainment, known for their work on Rise of the Planet of the Apes, is producing this “big-budget feature.”

The script will be penned by Michael Caleo, known for his work on the Paramount+ crime drama series Sexy Beast and an episode of The Sopranos.

This film marks the latest attempt to bring Popeye back to the big screen since the 1980 film. Sony had previously announced plans for a new Popeye animated film, but it did not come to fruition despite positive feedback on test footage. In 2020, King Features revived the project, only for it to face similar challenges and the film never made it to a release.

Popeye, recognized for his distinctive appearance with a cleft chin, pipe, and remarkable strength obtained from consuming spinach, has been a prominent figure in pop culture since his debut in a comic strip in the late 1920s. Over the years, he has appeared in various forms, including comic books, video games, and cartoons.

Notably, the 1980 live-action film Popeye, starring the late and great Robin Williams, stands as a significant adaptation of the beloved character. Williams delivered many beloved films with Popeye ranking among one of our favorites.

Stay tuned as more information on the upcoming live-action Popeye film becomes available.
