Marvel Comics brings together the creators behind the Black Cat series in Jed MacKay and C.F. Villa to deliver one of the most unexpected team-ups with Mary Jane and Black Cat Beyond #1. Two of Spider-Man’s most important people take the lead in this issue and we get a series that presents these two iconic characters as resourceful and intelligent characters that are worthy of their own title the only downfall of this issue is that we wanted to see much more of it.

MARY JANE AND BLACK CAT BEYOND #1 Review

Although the pair have always had a complicated relationship, the thing that has always anchored them into common ground has been Peter Parker/Spider-Man. In this issue, Peter is hospitalized as he recovers from an accident with Mary Jane and Felicia keeping him safe. The thing that cannot get praised enough for the one-shot issue is how great and entertaining the dynamic between Mary Jane and Felicia is. As Parker Robbins convinces Felicia to find his missing hood, the unlikely team-up of our dreams forms along with all the banter, arguments, and drama that we could not get enough of.

MARY JANE AND BLACK CAT BEYOND #1 Review

Throughout the issue the duo deal with villains, each other, and every obstacle to get the hood and return back to Peter, we are treated to watching the two characters who seem to find each other at odds becoming heroes and a hero team-up we hope to see again. With the two sitting atop a rooftop sharing their thoughts, it was the perfect show of vulnerability as the two share their feelings and doubts. MacKay really captured the heart of the issue at this moment and has bonded these two characters forever. and it’s a cherry on top to have the superb talent of Villa and Erick Arciniega to really drive that moment home.

MARY JANE AND BLACK CAT BEYOND #1 Review

Overall, MacKay drives a narrative without cluttering the issue with too many words and keeps the reader engaged throughout without anything slipping through the cracks. Villa shows an equally impressive amount of talent by being able to move the story forward hours at a time in a single page without overcomplicating the panels. For a one-shot issue, it gives you everything you could want and leaves you wishing for more, which to me is something that is difficult to do. The issue also gives you everything that’s enjoyable about Marvel comics with a fun, and almost cinematic experience throughout. Mary Jane and Black Cat: Beyond #1 opens the door for these characters as to what their next adventure could be.
