The Princess Bride star Mandy Patinkin shares an emotional behind-the-scenes moment from the film with a grieving fan, who is grappling with the loss of her dad.
She asked Patinkin if it was true that his performance as Iñigo Montoya was influenced by the death of his father, who passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer in 1972. Patinkin confirmed the rumor is true and with his wife at his side, he offered specific details, saying:
“I went outside of this castle and walked around the [maze] And I kept talking to my dad and I said, ‘Dad, I’m going to get this guy.’ From the minute I read the script, I knew, I said to Kath, ‘I’m going to do this part. Because in my mind, if I get this six-fingered guy, that means I killed the cancer that killed my dad and I’ll get to visit my dad.”
He also went on to say to the fan that she “can talk to your dad anytime you want, anywhere you want.”
This is a truly touching and emotional video. These are the moments that I truly cherish in Hollywood, and I am grateful that the video reached Patinkin and he had the chance to connect with a fan in a way only he had the ability to. Whether its films, tv, video games, or literature, we all build bonds with family and friends through these pop-culture outlets, and when life takes someone away from us, these timeless pieces of art are sometimes one of the bonds that cannot be severed along with our memories of them. Enjoy the video below and get the tissues ready!
