Legend of Zelda Live-Action Film Confirmed

Nintendo and Sony have announced a live-action movie adaptation of its immensely popular Legend of Zelda franchise. While there are no details on which game will be adapted or whether a new story will be created, Wes Ball has been chosen to direct the movie.

Known for his work on The Maze Runner films, Wes Ball’s next project is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which just saw its first trailer release and is set to release in May 2024. Shigeru Miyamoto from Nintendo and Avi Arad from Arad Productions will be producing the film. No writer or casting announcements made at this time.

The Legend of Zelda franchise has been loved by video game fans since its initial release in 1986. With almost 30 games across multiple consoles, the series typically revolves around a young hero named Link, who embarks on a quest to save Princess Zelda from various dangers. Breath of the Wild, released in 2017, introduced an open-world concept that allowed players more freedom in their exploration and gameplay. Its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, was released in May 2023. The long-standing franchise has been a staple for not only Nintendo but the entire video game fandom.

Breath of the Wild is set 100 years before the main events of the game. In this prelude, the powerful Calamity Ganon returns and brings chaos to the kingdom of Hyrule. Ganon takes control of the Guardians and unleashes them upon the world. The four Champions and the King of Hyrule lose their lives trying to stop him.

Link protects Princess Zelda and gets gravely injured. Zelda uses her powers and the Sheikah Slate to seal Link’s wounded body in the Shrine of Resurrection to preserve his life. Link sleeps for a century, losing all memories.

When Link wakes up, the King’s spirit explains the dire situation and tells him to seek out the descendants of the four Champions and the Divine Beasts. Link must defeat the Blights to free the spirits of the Champions. Along the way, he learns more about their relationships and sacrifices. Finally, Link must go to Hyrule Castle to face Calamity Ganon and rescue Princess Zelda. The outcome of this clash between good and evil will determine the fate of the kingdom.

While it’s still uncertain which game will be adapted, the popularity of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom makes them strong contenders for a movie adaptation. Fans can look forward to experiencing the beloved world of Hyrule on the big screen in the future!
