Jason Aaron Taking Reins of IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
IDW Publishing recently renewed their license for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, ensuring the beloved heroes in a half shell remain in the game for more series in the future. The comic book company has extended its licensing deal with Paramount, the rights holder of the characters since 2009.
Under the renewed deal, IDW plans to release multiple titles in celebration of the property’s 40th anniversary. Among them is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution, a sequel to the popular The Last Ronin, which is set in an alternate future and is based on a long-lost outline from the 1980s authored by TMNT creators Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman.

Shortly after announcing the conclusion of the current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book series, IDW revealed plans for a relaunch this summer, with accomplished writer Jason Aaron taking the helm. Jason Aaron, known for his work on Avengers and Wolverine & The X-Men, will pen stories for the iconic heroes.
The new era will commence in June with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Alpha #1, followed by the launch of a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 in July. Notably, the new series is a relaunch and not a reboot, signifying that the events of the current comic book series will remain in canon for the new title.

In a statement about the upcoming series, Aaron expressed his excitement, emphasizing the impact the original Mirage Studios series had on him as a fan. He teased that readers can anticipate a blend of gritty action, a touch of darkness, and bone-cracking excitement as the mutated ninja brothers take on new challenges.
IDW editor-in-chief, Jamie S. Rich, also shared his enthusiasm for working with Jason Aaron and the excitement he brings to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe. Rich praised Aaron’s passion and expertise, touting his mastery and expressing eagerness for audiences to experience Aaron’s new contributions to the TMNT saga.

The current TMNT series will conclude with April’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #150, crafted by longtime writer Sophie Campbell. The additional members of the creative team working alongside Aaron in the new series are yet to be announced.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Alpha #1 is set to be available at your favorite local comic shops in June, marking the beginning of this new chapter in the turtles’ legacy.
