Image Comics Announces Free Agents – An All-New Superhero Series by Kurt Busiek and Fabian Nicieza
Excitement is building in the comic book world as Image Comics has announced Free Agents, an all-new ongoing superhero series that brings together an impressive team of creators. Bestselling, Eisner Award-winning writer Kurt Busiek (known for Astro City) joins forces with legendary and better-selling writer Fabian Nicieza (Deadpool) and fan-favorite artist Stephen Mooney (Half Past Danger). The creative team also includes colorist Triona Tree Farrell (Harley Quinn, Detective Comics) and letterer Tyler Smith of Comicraft, promising a vibrant and dynamic series launch.
The debut issue of Free Agents will be a giant-sized, action-packed release set to hit shelves in July. Fans can expect stunning variant-cover character portraits by Kevin Maguire (Justice League) and additional variants by some of the most incredible comic talents.
Free Agents, a superhero series with a unique twist, introduces readers to a team of young veterans and survivors of a massive interdimensional war. This team, consisting of Salvo, Pike, Katari, Shakti, Ridge, Maraud, and Chalice, finds themselves stranded on Earth after a victorious battle. They are now adjusting to their new status as free agents, attempting to build new lives away from constant conflict. However, their hope for a peaceful existence is short-lived when relics from their long war resurface, threatening everything they’ve worked for.

Kurt Busiek expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The Agents were done. They were retired and had started building new lives, attending college, and making themselves a place here on Earth. And then it all started coming back.” He also mentioned that the idea for Free Agents originated from plans for a crossover project with Image Publisher Eric Stephenson. While the crossover concept eventually fizzled out, the idea of Free Agents persisted.
Fabian Nicieza, known for his work on Deadpool, is thrilled about this collaboration between himself, Kurt Busiek, and Image Comics. He stated, “Whenever Kurt calls and says, ‘Wanna work on something together?’ my answer is always a really fast, ‘yes!'”
Artist Stephen Mooney couldn’t resist the opportunity to work with Busiek and Nicieza, remarking, “It took me all of five seconds to jump aboard Free Agents when Kurt got in touch and asked if I’d like to work on a creator-owned book with him. Learning that Fabian would also be involved was a massive bonus.”

The debut issue of Free Agents is scheduled for release on Wednesday, July 3, with multiple variant covers to collect. Stephen Mooney’s standard cover features a striking wraparound design (Lunar Code 0524IM231), while Kevin Maguire provides the second cover option (Lunar Code 0524IM232). Additional variant covers include a blank sketch variant (Lunar Code 0524IM233), a 1:25 incentive cover by Erik Larsen (Lunar Code 0524IM234), and a 1:50 incentive cover by Pete Woods (Lunar Code 0524IM235).

Free Agents will also be available on various digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play, making it easy for fans to dive into this new series wherever they are. Take advantage of what promises to be a thrilling addition to the superhero genre!
