Sony Developing I Know What You Did Last Summer Sequel

Sony Pictures has announced that they will be developing an I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel. No doubt inspiration is in the air as Scream has reinvigorated its franchise at Paramount and the slasher genre is back on the menu. Deadline reported that a sequel to the pair of slasher films has been green-lit by Sony and original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are in talks to return to the franchise.

The project is reported to still be in early development with producer Neal H. Moritz also in talks to return to the franchise and writer Leah McKendrick attached to pen the script. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is also reportedly attached to the project to helm the film. Robinson was a co-writer alongside Taika Waititi on Thor: Love and Thunder.

The franchise recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with the original film starring Hewitt, Prinze Jr. alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe. The film followed a group of friends who are involved in a terrible accident and see the incident come back to haunt them in the form of a hook-wielding serial killer that is stalking them. The film was followed by the sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

No plot details are known about the new sequel but again, there is no arguing that the success seen from the Scream franchise returning would inspire other franchises. It also points to the genius of bringing legacy characters back for longtime fans and rejuvenating the series with younger stars to entice new viewers. This franchise is one near and dear to my heart and the possibility to see it possibly see a newfound success such as Scream is beyond exciting.
