Groot #1: Readers will Experience Groot’s Rise as a Superhero Ahead of Grootfall

Marvel Comics has announced a new limited series titled Groot and it all begins in Groot #1. The new four-issue miniseries will highlight Groot’s rise as a superhero ahead of the upcoming event Grootfall which will change the cosmic Marvel Universe as the Guardians of the Galaxy prepare to explore corners of the Marvel Universe never seen before. The new series comes from writer Dan Abnett and artist Damian Couceiro with cover art by Lee Garbett. 

Headlining his own solo series, readers will finally experience the untold origin of Groot and who better to take us on this journey than Abnett who redefined the Guardians of the Galaxy during his acclaimed run as well as Annihilation and War of the Kings. Couceiro is a rising star who has already shown talents that are otherworldly during his work on Ghost Rider: Return Of Vengeance and X-Force. Together they will take us to Planet X as we explore Groot’s early days as he crosses paths with Captain Marvel and the ancestor of a fellow Guardian according to Marvel’s press release. 

Marvel’s description of Groot reads: 

“Before he was a Guardian of the Galaxy…before the Grootfall…young Groot lived a life of tranquility on his serene home world. But when monstrous invaders attack his planet, Groot must accept his heroic destiny! But will this destiny lead him to come to blows with a young Kree soldier by the name of Mar-Vell?”

Abnett shares his delight to return to Guardians, saying: 

“I am Groot! No, that’s not right… I am delighted to be back WITH Groot for this series that will explore his early life and adventures, reveal some secrets of his home and his people, introduce some fantastic new characters, reveal a couple of big secrets… and also guest star some VERY unexpected Marvel characters. So it’s back to the future for a blast from the past…. no, that’s not right either… If you like Marvel Cosmic, you’re going to LOVE this.”

Couceiro that Abnett’s story is an epic action-packed story, saying: 

“I’m thrilled to be working along with Dan on this origin story of Groot! Groot is a super fun character to work with, he’s cute but also brave and a warrior so there is a lot to play with, and Dan came up with a crazy epic story full of action and fun that I think readers will enjoy a lot!”

Groot #1 will be available at your favorite local comic shops and digitally on May 3, 2023.
