Gerard Butler Reprising Role of Stoick the Vast in Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon Adaptation

The live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon is gathering a talented ensemble cast, with Gerard Butler set to reprise his role as Stoick the Vast, chief of the Hairy Hooligan Viking tribe according to a report by Deadline. Joining him are Mason Thames and Nico Parker, who will take on the roles of Hiccup and Astrid.

While Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera voiced the iconic characters in the original animated films, the live-action adaptation will feature new actors suitable for the characters’ younger ages. Filmmaker Dean DeBlois, known for his work directing the original trilogy, is set to helm the highly anticipated adaptation as well as penning the script.

How to Train Your Dragon introduces Hiccup, a Norse teenager from the island of Berk, where the tradition of dragon-fighting runs deep. Despite his father, Chief of the clan, and his progressive views, Hiccup is considered a misfit due to his unorthodox sense of humor. Sent to dragon-fighting school, he strives to validate himself as a true Viking.

However, everything changes when he forms a bond with an injured dragon that he names Toothless, offering him the opportunity to carve a new path for his people’s future.

The adaptation from Universal Pictures still has a ways to go to round out the cast. Aside from Butler, Thames, Parker being cast and DeBlois helming the film. DeBlois will also be producing the film alongside David Cain, Rolando Davila-Beltran, Marc Platt, and Adam Siegel.

With the immense success of the original animated trilogy, the bar is set high for this live-action adaptation, and fans can’t wait to see how the beloved story translates to the big screen once again.

The How to Train Your Dragon live-action adaptation is scheduled to hit theaters on June 13, 2025.
