In indie graphic novels, few works capture the intricate dance of humanity and technology, like First Person Revocation, penned and illustrated by Peter Howarth, a seasoned writer and artist affiliated with Gritstone Arts. This 68-page volume, set against a noir-themed backdrop of a dystopian West Coast USA in the 2220s, introduces readers to a world where the promise of scientific advancement collides with the harrowing consequences of its misuse.
The narrative unfolds in a future where science has seemingly unraveled the mystery of human consciousness. Through a controversial method known as Inter-corporeal Shift (ICS), individuals can transfer their consciousness between bodies. While this innovation initially seems revolutionary, it soon spirals into chaos, leading to rampant psychoses among users. The government, responding to the crisis, has outlawed ICS, yet demand persists, driving a thriving underground market for this perilous technology.

First Person Revocation introduces us to its dual protagonists, Evangelina (Ev) and Michael, two young, bio-enhanced sex workers navigating the treacherous streets of this illicit world. As they attempt to escape their crash-and-burn lifestyle, their lives become intertwined with a serial killer who exploits the very technology that has ensnared them. The killer’s chilling ability to extend his murderous spree through ICS adds a sinister layer to an already dangerous environment.
The narrative captures the raw struggle of its characters against a backdrop of exploitation and despair. With references to popular sci-fi shows like Altered Carbon, In The Shadow of The Moon, Blade Runner, and Electric Dreams, Howarth crafts a tale rich in atmosphere and complexity. The influence of noir tropes enhances the tension, creating a gripping story that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

First Person Revocation is the first of three volumes that will delve deeper into the lives of characters entangled in the web of ICS. As the plot unfolds, readers will witness the evolving relationships and the impact of the serial killer’s actions on a community that is already teetering on the brink.
Peter Howarth’s First Person Revocation serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of human ambition unchecked by ethics. As readers embark on this harrowing journey, they will find themselves questioning not only the implications of technological advancement but also the very nature of humanity itself.
