Dakota Johnson in Talks to Star in MADAME WEB Movie
Reports are claiming that Sony is looking to bring its first female superhero into its Marvel Universe. A report from Deadline reported that Sony is looking to expand its Marvel universe after the immense success at the hands of Spider-Man: No Way Home. If the sources are accurate, Sony is developing a Madame Web movie with Dakota Johnson in talks to star and S.J. Clarkson reportedly attached to direct.
According to the sources, a screenplay has already been written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Cassandra Webb/Madame Web first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man comics and is an elderly woman with myasthenia gravis. in the events in the comics, Cassandra Webb uses her precognitive mutant abilities until she is killed then her powers and blindness are passed down to Julia Carpenter also known as the first Spider-Woman. The events and transfer of abilities see Carpenter become the second Madame Web.
According to sources, the project could very well shift into something else as Cassandra Webb’s incarnation did not actively fight as her age and illness prevented such conflict, but the film could very well shift its focus to Julia Carpenter as that would fit well with its current landscape of Sony Pictures’ Marvel Universe.
Per the sources, Sony executives have been on the hunt for a female leading role and have met with a number of actors with Johnson becoming the front-runner and now currently in talks to star. Although not confirmed what role she will play it is presumed it will be the role of Julia Carpenter
. No Way Home opened seemingly endless possibilities with what characters to bring into their universe and with the success of the No Way Home and the reports that big characters didn’t make it into the final cut of the film, its no surprise to see Sony wanting to capitalize on No Way Home to further explore characters.
