Bloodsucking Darkness: Junji Ito’s Horror Manga Getting Live-Action Adaptation
The celebrated horror manga from Japanese horror master Junji Ito is getting a live-action adaptation. Bloodsucking Darkness will be getting a live-action film adaptation as well as two additional stories of Ito’s through his collaboration with Fangoria. Along with Bloodsucking Darkness, two other stories from Smashed: Junji Ito Story Collection will be adapted. For now, we have some information on the upcoming film based on the vampire tale.
Co-writer of The Haunting of Hill House, Jeff Howard will be developing the screenplay of the film adaptation as well as executive producing. Bloodsucking Darkness follows Nami, a young girl whose bad breakup leads them to develop an eating disorder. Things only get stranger from there as she begins to vomit blood, she also begins to have nightmares of blood and a vampiric face and in Ito fashion, offers a shocking twist to readers.
Ito shared the excitement they have over the upcoming adaptation, saying:
“Fangoria Studios is going to adapt my manga! I’m so excited to see how it will turn out. I hope I get to see the trailer in my dreams tonight!”
Fangoria Studios SVP Armen Aghaeian added:
When I found out a live-action Junji Ito adaptation was going to happen, I chased after it with everything I had, because I just couldn’t live with anyone else getting there before me… The combination of fear and feelings is where I always want to be. Ito’s stories and visuals are pure nightmare fuel. The team at Fangoria is honored to be working alongside Junji Ito. We are excited to bring the horror found in the pages of his work to life onto the biggest screens possible.”
The adaptation will be produced by Aghaeian alongside Tara Ansley, Abhi Goel, Yasu Kutami, Tsubasa Yamaguchi, Kevin Nicklaus, Phil Wurtzel, Ryan Lewis, and Joe Riley.
No release date has been given for the Bloodsucking Darkness adaptation. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.
