The BabyKlok Tour Turns Arizona Into A METALOCALYPSE

Brendon Small brought his beloved virtual band Dethklok to Phoenix, Arizona at the Arizona Federal Theater as the Babyklok tour made a stop in our sunny state. The current members who are bringing the virtual band to life are frontman and guitarist Brendon Small, the creator of the Adult Swim hit series Metalocalypse.

Joining him are Nilli Brosh on backup vocals and guitar, Bryan Beller on bass (also providing backup vocals), and lastly, Gene Hoglan, known as the human drum machine, who brought the heavy double bass and insane drum fills that truly seem inhuman. This was the second-to-last stop on their US co-headline tour with BabyMetal.

Dethklok brought absolutely everything to this show: stunning visuals, brand-new animation, multiple strobe lights, and lasers. What truly brought everything together was the entire band being in perfect sync with the animation playing in the background. Apart from the perfect synchronization, you could not tell that they were playing a live show. It sounds like you’re definitely listening to an in-studio album.

Dethklok played songs stemming from Dethalbum all the way to their newest record Dethalbum IV, and some from The Doomstar Requiem, and a few EPs along the way. Just to name a few hits, they opened up with “Detheme” then jumped to “Briefcase Full of Guts,” “Awaken,” “I Ejaculate Fire,” and their newest single, “Aortic Desecration,” which is featured in “Dethalbum IV” and in “Army of the Doomstar.”

The crowd absolutely lost it when some of these were played, from the crowd jumping around and throwing horns up to starting a few moshes and circle pits. The energy was truly amazing from the band to the crowd.

The two biggest highlights from the show would have to be the lovable yet creepy mascot “Face Bones,” who totally stole the show and gave us valuable advice on how not to be a jerk in a metal setting, and how to be responsible while partaking in drugs and alcohol in a metal setting. Two very important lessons one should follow at a metal show.

Now, onto Baby Metal. The pairing no one was expecting, this co-headline would be the chef’s kiss. The energy from Babymetal and the crowd was just so refreshing from the typical vibe you get from any other metal show. Kindness, love, and passion were displayed throughout the entire show. Everyone was in entire unity and bliss during this unforgettable show. By far one of the most diverse shows you could ever imagine.

Su-Metal (Suzuka Nakamoto), Moametal (Moa Kikuchi), and Momometal (Momoko Okazaki) brought their amazing vocals and stylish J-pop dance choreography to the forefront, which really made them stand out. Coming from the J-pop/J-Rock genre to an all-new and beloved Metal Genre, they worked with the entire sound of the band. Everything was in tune, with the girls air drumming in sync with their very own drummer live on stage.

The rest of the band members, such as Hideki Aoyama (known as the God of Drums) on drums, brought their own unique flair to the stage. Ohmura Takayoshi (the God of Guitar) flawlessly played the guitar, replicating the sounds of Tom Morello when they performed “Metali.” Shinji Yuuto, also known as Leda Cygnus (the Other God of Guitar), kept up with the fast-paced vocals and drums.

He showcased his guitar skills during “Metali” as well. Bohte Daisuke, better known as “BOH” (the God of Bass), kept up with the tight speed of the drums and guitars, but most importantly, he showed off his funkiness throughout the show. He really demonstrated how groovy and funky he can get during his solo in “Metali.”

With everything blending so well together, their set was really diverse. Some songs really nailed the J-pop/J-rock genre, while others were heavy and raw, which made everyone headbang. Some songs felt like you were listening and watching an anime intro. The journey they took us on from beginning to end was exquisite. Their intro would definitely make any Avengers fans tremble and bow before Thanos because their intro before their set was so powerful. The outro is a clear sign that we defeated Thanos.

This group given their music diversity will transcend time and space in itself fulfilling the prophecy that was foretold in the intro. If the Babyklok tour visits a city near you, make sure to check it out and pay your tribute to the metal gods! You will not be disappointed.

In my spare time, I like to go on long walks with my dog Chewie, go to concerts, read comics, watch spoopy movies, and if time permits play some video games with the guys. Be excellent to each other and always rock out.
