28 Years Later Confirmed, Lands at Sony Pictures

After years of waiting and anticipation, the much-awaited sequel to 28 Weeks Later has been officially confirmed. Sony Pictures has acquired the distribution rights for 28 Years Later and its sequel, as reported by THR. The bidding process reportedly involved Sony and Warner Bros., with Sony ultimately securing the rights.

Original director Danny Boyle and co-writer Alex Garland, the creative minds behind the 2002 film 28 Days Later, will join forces once again for this project and its sequel. While Boyle is set to direct 28 Years Later, it has not been confirmed whether he will also helm the follow-up. Meanwhile, Garland is slated to craft the scripts for both films.

More than twenty years after its initial release, 28 Days Later is poised for a long-awaited sequel. According to THR, the original film’s director, Danny Boyle, and co-writer Alex Garland are joining forces once again to create 28 Years Later. With the potential of it evolving into a trilogy.

When it first hit screens in 2002, 28 Days Later broke new ground by depicting zombies not as slow-moving reanimated corpses, but as swift, lethal, and truly frightening infected. It also set the stage for Cillian Murphy‘s breakout role which has led him to be one of the leading male stars in Hollywood, having had stellar roles in Peaky Blinders, Quiet Place 2, and most recently, Oppenheimer.

Following the 2002 hit, a sequel titled 28 Weeks Later was released in 2007, the film featured Jeremy Renner prior to joining the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and donning the title of the Mayor of Kingstown in the Paramount+ original series. The franchise has since expanded into various comic book adaptations, even speculation about a sequel, potentially named 28 Months Later, circulated in 2015.
