Until Dawn Horror Game Getting Film Adaptation
Sony Pictures has confirmed that Supermassive Games‘ 2015 horror hit Until Dawn will be getting a film adaptation. The movie will be directed by filmmaker David F. Sandberg, known for his work on horror hits like Lights Out, and Annabelle: Creation, as well as the DCEU film Shazam! and its sequel Shazam!: Fury of the Gods.
The script, initially written by The Invitation‘s Blair Butler, will have the latest pass by Gary Dauberman, recognized for his involvement in horror series such as It, Annabelle, and The Nun.

The project will be developed by Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems in collaboration with PlayStation Productions. Asad Qizilbash, Head of Product at PlayStation Studios and Head of PlayStation Productions, expressed excitement about the partnership with Sony Pictures and the opportunity to bring the fan-favorite PlayStation game Until Dawn to the big screen.
Until Dawn, originally a PlayStation exclusive is a choose-your-own-adventure horror game set on a snowy mountain, where players control eight young adults striving to survive the night. Similar to Supermassive‘s other games, such as those in The Dark Pictures Anthology or The Quarry, the story’s outcome in Until Dawn is entirely determined by the player’s choices. Each choice can determine the life or death of each character.
The game featured a cast of Hollywood stars, including Hayden Panettiere, Peter Stormare, Rami Malek, Brett Dalton, Meaghan Martin, Galadriel Stineman, Noah Fleiss, Nichole Bloom, Jordan Fisher, Antonella Lentini, Beth Washington, and Larry Fessenden. Regarding the film adaptation, it’s uncertain whether any of these stars will return to reprise their roles.

It’s also worth noting that the studio has some creative opportunities to explore as Until Dawn created a mixed bag of intersecting horror genres and stories. It will be interesting to see how the studio approaches Stormare’s character as the narrator of sorts guiding us through the chapters of the unraveling story.
There is also the blend of psychological thriller and creature features as Malek’s character seemingly plays a very deadly prank on his friends as a result of the opening sequence of the game that leads to the disappearance of two members of the group.
It all comes to a head with the reveal of the Wendigo curse plaguing the area which reveals the true evil and threat being posed to the group of characters we are tasked with ensuring their survival. How this all plays out within the runtime of a film and the creative direction that is taken all remains to be seen.

Stay tuned for more information on the upcoming Until Dawn film adaptation.
