Steamboat Willie Horror Movie in Development

According to a report by Variety, a horror movie based on the iconic Steamboat Willie short film is currently in development. Departing from the family-friendly image traditionally associated with the Walt Disney Animation Studios character, the upcoming project, directed by Steven LaMorte, will portray a dark and bloody tale now that Steamboat Willie entered the public domain on January 1, 2024.

This incarnation of the classic character will depict a sadistic mouse tormenting a group of individuals aboard a ferry, with limited means of escape as they are far from dry land.

In a statement regarding his intentions with the project, LaMorte commented on the film’s tone, expressing his excitement to bring a twisted take on the beloved character to the world.

“Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror.”

Before embarking on this chilling adaptation, LaMorte directed The Mean One, a slasher story based on How The Grinch Stole Christmas. His experience with this project has served as a valuable preparation for the endeavor at hand. The film saw Cindy’s parents brutally murdered at the hands of the iconic character in the quiet mountain town.

The untitled horror comedy will undoubtedly take full advantage of the iconic character and his beloved story through the years to turn the joy it has delivered many for generations into unadulterated torment for not only the characters that find themselves at Steamboat Willie’s mercy but also those of us brave enough to tune in for the film.

While the 1928 depiction of Mickey Mouse can now be utilized by anyone, recent iterations and associated branding remain off-limits. Similar to the precautions taken during the production of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, the team behind the Steamboat Willie horror movie will need to navigate the use of the character carefully.
