Night of the Ghoul #1 Review: Explore the Lost Footage with A Very Real Threat in New Horror Series
So here we are again. You there reading this article. Wondering how I’ve been and why I haven’t pursued my dream of male modeling. Me smiling back at you wondering when you’ll ask me why I used to love old public access shows of the 80s and what memories it stirs up in my brain and why I’m not eating my plate of buffalo wings.
Well, I would tell you that it’s because I would watch the midnight movie shows where the host would show movies in the public domain which were also low-budget black and white horror movies while dressed in some kind of stereotypical crypt keeper style outfit, and to be honest spicy food is now hurting my tummy. One of the many perks of getting older. Now,, let’s talk about Dark Horse‘s Night of the Ghoul #1…

This book gives me that feeling again. I felt as if I was 8 again starting up so far beyond my bedtime that it was ridiculous. Pj’s emblazoned with a random cartoon character, comforter pulled up over my head, a bowl of some form of stolen snacks while I watch some kind of forgotten gem of lost cinema lore. Completely happy. And this book gives me that feeling again and I couldn’t be more grateful.
The story is written wonderfully by Scott Snyder and all the art being handled by Francesco Francavilla. And let me take a moment to praise this work. The muted coloring and very bold inking style make the book feel like classic cinema and I absolutely love it. Lettering is done by AndWorld Design rounding out the very talented team.

We begin our story as a father and son drive in the middle of the night through what is described as fifty miles west of Calexico, fun fact, Calexico is right around my neck of the desert so glad to see it. We follow our familial team as they drive to their destination, a rest home where a resident whose father has been looking for is believed to reside. Now, a side question, do rest homes allow midnight visits? But I digress.
We learn the father and son have been searching for this individual based on a film he created called The Night of the Ghoul. And let me just say how refreshing it is to get a story about one of my favorite monsters. I love the twist on the idea that a ghoul eats the dead and spreads disease. Our resourceful duo finds the man they are looking for and he tells the father a story with beginnings in World War One and an ominous future they are now going to have to face.
Night of the Ghoul is an ode to classic horror. It will transport readers back to an era where the crypts belonged to The Creeper, Things lived in the swamp, and the late nights belonged to the ghouls. This was a great start to what no doubt will be a terrifying tale. I can not recommend this tile more so do yourself a favor and check this one out sooner rather than later.
