Mortal Kombat 2: Karl Urban in Talks to Play Johnny Cage in MK Sequel
New Line‘s upcoming Mortal Kombat sequel is going Hollywood as Karl Urban is in talks to play the fan-favorite character Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. The sequel to the 2021 film based on the hit video game franchise of the same name created by Ed Boon and John Tobias had a pandemic release straight to HBO Max and proved to be a faithful adaptation of the blockbuster series of games while taking some liberties on the creative front. It paid off as it was well-received by fans and earned itself a sequel.
Simon McQuoid is returning to helm the sequel with Jeremy Slater penning the script. The 2021 film saw an MMA fighter who gets wrapped up in an otherworldly fight with the entire universe at stake which takes him into a gritty, violent, battle with Earth’s greatest fighters on his side. The film starred Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Tadanobu Asano, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ludi Lin, Max Huang, Sisi Stringer, Mel Jarnson, Nathan Jones, Daniel Nelson, and Chin Han.
The 2021 film revealed a post-credit scene that confirmed Johnny Cage would appear in the sequel although no hint to the likeness or actor that would play the character was given. Urban would definitely bring star power to a character that demands such a persona at its core. Urban has had a hand in many fandoms with roles in The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Marvel, and The Boys. Mortal Kombat 2 was produced by James Wan, Todd Garner, E. Bennett Walsh, and McQuoid.
Mortal Kombat 2 is currently in pre-production with plot details and release date pending. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.
