Marvel Brings Back J. Michael Straczynski for A New Monthly Captain America Series
Marvel Comics has announced that writer J. Michael Straczynski will be returning to the publisher for a new monthly Captain America series. Straczynski is no stranger to fans of the publisher as he has penned The Amazing Spider-Man and Thor in the past and now looks to The First Avenger as his next adventure alongside artist Jesús Saiz who provided art for the recent Punisher comic series.
Marvel doing as Marvel does is being mum about the details of the upcoming series but they did provide the following in their press release:
Decades ago, Steve Rogers changed the world forever. Now powerful and insidious forces are assembling to ensure he never does it again. Past, present and future collide as the man out of time reckons with an existential threat determined to set the world on a darker path at any cost…
Straczynski also had the chance to speak to io9 about his return and said:
“Overall, the goal is to do some really challenging stories, some really fun stories, and get inside Steve’s head to see who he really is in ways that may not have been fully explored before. If folks like what I did with Peter in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, and Thor in, well… THOR, then they should give this a shot, because I’m really swinging for the bleachers in this one!”
Based on the short details and Straczynski’s words. It seems as if we will get a mixed bag in the upcoming monthly series which should give us an outlook on Steve Rogers’ past before he became Captain America and also the man out of time.
Captain America is featured in many titles coming out of Marvel and it is refreshing to see the creator wanting to purposely explore a dark time in Cap’s history which could be his very own Uncle Ben moment as he says:
“One thing about Steve Rogers that’s never really been addressed is the period between when his parents died. and when he became Captain America.”
He also notes that those fans who enjoyed his work with Peter Parker’s Spider-Man will enjoy the stories he has to tell with Captain America. Straczynski is also returning to another beloved franchise as he is attached to the previously announced Babylon: The Road Home which marks the return of Babylon 5.
Captain America #1 will be available at your favorite local comic shop and digitally on September 20, 2023.
