Kyle Starks Talks DC Comics’ Peacemaker and the Impact of James Gunn
Kyle Starks, the acclaimed writer known for his work on comics like Sexcastle, Rick and Morty, and Marvel Unleashed, recently discussed DC Comics‘ Peacemaker and the impact of James Gunn’s influence on the character during an interview on Blake’s Buzz. The clip captures Starks’ thoughts on the evolution of Peacemaker and the art of storytelling in superhero narratives.
In the clip, Starks highlights the unique aspect of Peacemaker’s character development, emphasizing that a key to creating meaningful stories is giving characters human fallibilities. He explains that Peacemaker isn’t just an unbeatable hero but someone with flaws and insecurities, making his journey more relatable and engaging.

“From the get-go, you’re like, wait, I like these characters; their journey is so much more meaningful to you. Again, that’s just art. It’s a writer’s trick, right? So he’s so good at that,” Starks said. He further notes that the character’s vulnerability adds depth to the narrative. “And [Gunn] basically takes people and gives them human fallibilities. Like they’re not just, you know, it’s not just I’m an unbeatable hero machine who never gives up. You know, I’m kind of a dummy who doesn’t know everyone doesn’t like me. When I find out, it’s upsetting to me. And now I want to be a better person.
“Like that’s a great arc in any story, much less a superhero story.” This shift toward a more humanized Peacemaker aligns with James Gunn’s style, which balances humor, action, and character-driven storytelling with superhero films.
Starks’ interpretation of Peacemaker, from DC Black Label’s Peacemaker Tries Hard, which is non-canonical, is a testament to the broader trend within DC Comics. He points out that other characters have undergone changes due to their popularity, much like the Teen Titans’ transformation following the success of their animated series. “The most popular version will win, right?” he remarks, underscoring the significant influence of James Gunn’s work on the portrayal of Peacemaker and other DC characters.
Starks reiterates that Gunn’s approach isn’t about disrespecting characters but about discovering the most compelling way to tell their stories. He cites Gunn’s work on Guardians of the Galaxy, Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker, implying that the director’s passion for the medium guides his decisions. According to Starks, Gunn’s dedication to entertainment doesn’t compromise the characters’ integrity, which reassures the audience.
