Coridden Review: New Shape-Shifting Adventure

Coridden: A Vibrant RPG That Lets You Become the Beast

Coridden throws players into a mystery-driven adventure where you and your siblings are given gauntlets imbued with an enigmatic AI. These gauntlets push you toward a singular goal—getting them repaired. The real intrigue lies in what these gauntlets can do: they allow you to transform into the beasts you defeat, a mechanic that serves as both a gameplay highlight and a story focal point. As you progress, you’ll take on main and side quests, typically revolving around defeating enemies or retrieving items. Along the way, lore logs help flesh out the world, particularly the city of Aasha, which is mysteriously sealed behind a forcefield. While some quests feel like standard fetch or combat missions, they remain engaging thanks to the well-told backstories and amusing character interactions. The storytelling isn’t groundbreaking, but it does its job of keeping you engaged.

The defining feature of Coridden is its shape-shifting mechanic, which allows players to swap between human and beast forms seamlessly. Each form has its own stamina bar and unique abilities, adding a layer of strategy to combat and exploration. The ability to collect new beast forms as loot, similar to how weapons or armor are acquired in other RPGs, keeps progression exciting and rewarding. Each beast form has its own upgrade path, which can sometimes feel overwhelming but also adds depth to character customization. Playing in co-op mode adds another layer of fun, as players can take turns navigating or riding on each other’s backs while managing their inventory. This cooperative experience helps smooth out inventory micromanagement and adds a fun social dynamic to exploration.

Visually, Coridden boasts a vibrant, classic style enhanced by colorful glows and impressive particle effects. The game’s world is beautifully designed, focusing on outdoor environments where the visuals truly shine. Details like dynamic foliage reactions to stomping attacks, shimmering water effects as you glide through it as a crocolisk, and glowing magical attacks add a level of polish that makes the world feel alive. While not pushing graphical boundaries, the art direction makes the game visually compelling and immersive.

The atmospheric music in Coridden is one of its standout features, perfectly complementing the mix of barren and lush landscapes. The soundtrack adds depth to the game world, making exploration feel more immersive. However, the voice acting and writing leave something to be desired. Some actors deliver forced performances, while others don’t fit the game’s tone. While this doesn’t ruin the experience, it does detract from the otherwise engaging world and characters.

Coridden is an enjoyable action RPG that shines in its transformation mechanics and co-op gameplay. The ability to shift between human and beast forms at will, collect and upgrade new creatures, and explore a beautifully crafted world makes for a compelling experience. While the quest design is serviceable and the story keeps things moving, the weaker voice acting and occasionally overwhelming upgrade system keep it from reaching true greatness. If you’re looking for a fresh take on action RPGs with an engaging shape-shifting mechanic, Coridden is worth checking out here on Steam.
