Dark Horse Comics To Adapt Neil Gaiman’s Anansi Boys

Revealed in a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Anansi Boys is going to be adapted into both a comic book and a TV series. The comic series, consisting of eight issues, will be released in June by Dark Horse Comics.

The live-action TV show, which has already completed casting and shooting, will be available on Amazon. Neil Gaiman is involved as one of the showrunners, similar to his previous roles in showrunning TV series like Netflix’s Sandman and Good Omens on Prime Video.

The Anansi Boys comic book will be adapted by film and comic book author Marc Bernardin, with artist Shawn Martinbrough on art, Chris Sotomayor on colors, and finally, Jim Campbell on letters. The debut issue’s main cover will also be illustrated by David Mack, with two variant covers by Martinbrough and Denys Cowan.

The story follows “Fat” Charlie Nancy, a boring Londoner who discovers that his recently deceased father was the trickster god of African folklore, Anansi, and that he has a twin brother he’s never met. This revelation sets off a reality-spanning odyssey of sibling rivalry, jealous deities, and the challenges of godhood.

Marc Bernardin expresses his excitement by saying:

“To say that I’ve been a fan of Neil’s work for decades would be the understatement of all understatements. So to have the opportunity to help transmute his wonderful Anansi Boys to comics is a gobsmacking honor. I hope readers who love the novel encounter those moments they adore as well as discover some fresh madness to keep them on their toes.”

Shawn Martinbrough also shares his thoughts, stating:

“Despite having many Neil Gaiman collections on my bookshelf, surprisingly I had never read The Anansi Boys. When Dark Horse approached me to illustrate this adaptation, I jumped at the chance to tell this funny, fantastical story full of rich and charming characters.

Designing the larger than life figures of Papa Nancy and Spider has been a delight, but my favorite by far, was capturing the endearing quirks and idiosyncrasies of Fat Charlie.”

Anansi Boys #1 is scheduled to arrive at your favorite local comic shops on June 26, 2024.
