TMNT: The Last Ronin – A Bloody Return to the Big Screen

Get your nunchucks ready because the beloved pizza-loving, sewer-dwelling heroes are making a thrilling comeback! Yes, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are returning to the big screen in another live-action adaptation, and this time, the studio is focusing on a more mature audience.

Paramount Pictures is shaking things up by diving into the gritty and intense world of the hit comic book miniseries Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. With screenwriter Tyler Burton Smith (Boy Kills World) and Walter Hamada’s 18hz production company at the helm, this project will redefine the heroes and their half-shells like never before.

For those unfamiliar, The Last Ronin plunges readers into a dystopian future where the grandson of the Turtles’ arch-nemesis, Shredder, holds New York City in his iron grip. With most of our heroes fallen and their wise mentor Splinter no more, one lone Turtle rises from the shadows to seek vengeance, armed with all four signature weapons.

But hold the anchovies because this isn’t your typical Turtles adventure. The days of light-hearted antics and cartoonish villains are behind us. Instead, we’re about to embark on a journey into a darker narrative that delves into themes of revenge, loyalty, loss, and the frailty of the human spirit.

Time out! How did we get to this dark, cowabunga-less timeline? It all started in 1984 when creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird unleashed the TMNT onto the comic book scene. Originally conceived as a parody, the Turtles quickly became a cultural phenomenon, spawning everything from action figures to animated series to those catchy theme songs we all still sing along to.

Over the years, we’ve seen the Turtles in various incarnations, but it was in these early days when Eastman and Laird began to toy with the idea that became the recent IDW hit The Last Ronin. It marks a bold new direction for the franchise.

Though this is the first time we’ve seen the Turtles geared towards an adult audience on the silver screen, longtime shellheads may remember Bodycount from Kevin Eastman and Simon Bisley, which sees Raphael and Casey Jones have to murder their way out of assassination plots and mountains of gangsters.

I spoke to Kevin Eastman at Planet Comicon back in 2023 about this. Though it may seem shocking to many to have an adult-oriented Turtles story, the comics, time and time again, have always tried to adapt to their growing and aging audience. You can watch it here.

And it’s not just us fans who are buzzing with excitement. The Last Ronin comic book series has been a sensation, and its hardcover collection ranks among the top-selling graphic novels of 2023. This success is a testament to the hunger for stories that challenge our expectations, and the Turtles are poised to deliver.

So, whether you’re a longtime fan or just discovering the awesomeness of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael, get ready to witness the next chapter in their epic saga. With Paramount Pictures leading the charge, we’re in for a wild ride filled with action, drama, and a hint of nostalgia.

Cowabunga, dudes! It’s time to shell out for the most radical TMNT adventure yet!

Until then, check out The Last Ronin, The Last Ronin: Lost Years, and The Last Ronin II from IDW Publishing!
