Our Flag Means Death Canceled By Max After Two Seasons

Max has canceled the original comedy series Our Flag Means Death after its two-season run. The series, which returned for Season 2 in October 2023, concluded with its series finale airing on October 26th, 2023. Despite receiving constant praise from both critics and fans, the series was unable to navigate the competitive waters of the streaming world.

“While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyous, hilarious, and heartfelt stories that creator David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy, and the entire superb cast and crew brought to life,” a Max spokesperson said. “We also thank the dedicated fans who embraced these stories and built a gorgeous, inclusive community surrounding the show.”

Our Flag Means Death, created by David Jenkins, first premiered in 2022, chronicling the journey of Stede Bonnet (played by Rhys Darby), a wealthy landowner determined to become The Gentleman Pirate. Stede forms a crew with a commitment to leading with kindness and minimal violence, setting himself apart from traditional pirate practices.

Throughout the series, Stede’s path intertwines with the infamous Blackbeard (portrayed by Taika Waititi), also known as Edward Teach, and the two develop a complex relationship. In Season 2, Stede and Blackbeard navigate romantic challenges and a difficult breakup, prompting them to reevaluate their lives as they strive to reconcile and reconnect.

Season 2 also brought changes within the crew and introduced a significant new character in the form of pirate queen Zheng Yi Sao, portrayed by Rubio Qian.

Alongside Darby, Waititi, and Qian, the series also starred Vico Ortiz, Joel Fry, Con O’Neill, Kristian Nairn, Nathan Foad, Matthew Maher, and many more.

You can bid farewell to the series that delivered offbeat humor and featured a stellar cast by watching seasons 1 & 2 of Our Flag Means Death on Max.
