Daredevil: Born Again Reportedly Put on Hold

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming Marvel TV show Daredevil: Born Again has been put on hold once again and is undergoing a creative reboot. Actor Charlie Cox is set to reprise his role as Daredevil in this series. Sources reveal that writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord developed a legal procedural storyline that differed from the action-packed and violent tone of the original Netflix version. Marvel found the need to rethink the show’s original intention after greenlighting the concept.

The decision to reboot came after the production of the eighteen-episode series was halted due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Upon reviewing the footage, the higher-ups at Marvel determined that the reboot, which aimed to bring back Cox as Daredevil, along with Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, was not meeting their expectations. The version created by Ord and Corman leaned more towards a superhero Law drama, diverging from the source material of the Netflix series.

The revamp of Daredevil falls on a trend of disappointing TV projects from Marvel. Since the successful debut of WandaVision in 2021, the studio, known for its dominance in the film industry, has released over 50 hours of television content. However, the studio deviated from the traditional model of pilot episodes and greenlighting shows based on their own merits and also opted to produce high-budget TV series without hiring showrunners.

Marvel is now looking to shift its television production methods to align more closely with the traditional model. The goal is to merge the Marvel culture with the conventions of traditional television. Marvel’s head of streaming, television, and animation, Brad Winderbaum, emphasizes the importance of honoring the source material and telling stories on television that capture its essence.

The reboot of Daredevil: Born Again also signifies another significant change in Marvel’s TV structure: the plan to hire showrunners. Previously, only head writers played a major role in the production team for shows like Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight.

It remains to be seen if this will be the answer to the growing issues of Marvel’s small-screen lineup. We all certainly eagerly await the return of the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen!
